Family Secret Santa
Keep couples apart in the draw, add grandparents and kids who don't have phones, and play again with the same crew without repeating pairs.
- Free
- Exclusions for couples
- Kids play without phones

In short. Pick the Family template (up to $50, on the holiday itself, kids welcome) or Friends (up to $30, a Saturday get-together) and share the link in the family group chat. Everyone joins from their own phone, ticks “we're a couple” if they play with a partner, and writes their wishes. Any player can add grandma, grandpa or a child who doesn't have a phone and play on their behalf. Relatives in other states? Set gifts to ship to a pickup point or by post.
How to set up a family Secret Santa
In a family the tricky parts are different: nobody should draw their own spouse, and grandma shouldn’t sit it out.

Family or Friends
Family: up to $50 on the holiday itself. Friends: up to $30 and a Saturday get-together.

Mark the couples
Partners tick “we’re a couple”, and the draw keeps them apart.

Add grandma
No smartphone? Any player adds her with her wishes and plays on her behalf.

Open your envelope
On draw day everyone sees who they’re buying for, with that person’s wishes.

Three reasons names in a hat don’t work for a big family.
-
Exclusions for couples
Besides “we’re a couple”, the organizer can block any other pairing, say, siblings who swapped gifts last year. Every exclusion is respected, and the draw still makes one circle.

-
Relatives far away
Aunt across the country? Switch the exchange to the mail or a pickup point. Her address is visible to her Secret Santa alone and vanishes a month after the exchange.

-
The big reveal, then play again
On exchange day everyone can find out who their Secret Santa was. Then “Play again” starts a new game with the same people and settings, and last game's pairs won't repeat.

Family Secret Santa rules that keep the peace
One budget for the adults
$30–50 is common. Everyone spends the same, and the gift still feels like a real present.
Kids by their own rules
If little ones play, agree on a smaller amount for their gifts, or run a separate game just for the kids.
Everyone writes wishes
Even the relative who “needs nothing”. The “what not to give” line saves you from a fifth mug and an eighth candle.
Open gifts in turns
Let each person guess who their Santa was before opening. The game can reveal the pairs at the end.
Include whoever is away
Ship early to the relative who can't make it, and video-call them in when everyone opens gifts.
Liked it? Go again
After the exchange, “Play again” sets up a new round with the same family, and the pairs won't repeat.
